Oilers Update - Free Agent Frenzy: Oilers Beef Up. Part 1

Here is a quick and dirty look at what the Oilers did this afternoon during the July 1st Free Agent Frenzy for 2011.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired the following players:

Ben Eager (LW) age 27 Signed for 3 years for 3.3 Million l as a UFA

Darcy Hordichuk (LW) age 30 Signed for a 1 Year Contract

Cam Barker (D) age 25 Signed for a 1 Year Contract

Eric Belanger (C) age 33 Signed for 3 years (undisclosed)

Andy Sutton (D) age 35 Trade between Anaheim Ducks for Kurtis Foster.

Corey Potter (D) age 27 Signed a 1 year 2-Way Deal

The Oilers also dealt away with the following players:

Sheldon Souray (D) 35 Signed with the Dallas Stars

Jim Vandermeer (D) 30 Signed with the San Jose Sharks

Kurtis Foster (D) 29 Traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Andy Sutton.

In a brief press conference , GM Steve Tambellini admitted that the team "will take a breath" before returning to the phones to make some more deals.  Players such as Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule, Sam Gagner and Shawn Horcoff are all on the trading block but it appears that the Oilers may have to wait until mid summer or the start of the season to swap players.

Possibly the biggest news for the Edmonton Oilers Fans is that Sheldon Souray is now a Dallas Star. After being sent to purgatory for more than a year, GM Steve Tambellini finally placed the defenceman on unconditional waivers yesterday afternoon.

to be continued...
