Oilers Update - "Oh I remember that!" Trash talk!

Yes!!!! Friday is finally here!!!

Today on "Oh I remember that!" we're going to get a little taste of psychological war-fare: the trash talk!  We're going to go behind the scenes and get a players perspective of what really goes on at ice-level.

Here we have a very intellectual stimulating conversation between two rival players...er, goons  Tim Hunter and Dave Brown.  What makes this piece so damn priceless is that the bitter banter of cuss words hit the air-ways during a live television broadcast.

Listen carefully...reading lips NOT necessary.

Oilers Update - Oilers vs Wild

The Minnesota Wild will play host to the Edmonton Oilers at the Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul.

The Oilers are riding a 3 game winning streak and it was the kids: Eberle, Hall and Nugent-Hopkins who are leading the club in preseason points.  However, the dynamic trio will sit out tonight's game, which will pave the way for the other young guns to make their final impressions before the final cuts are announced next week.

"It certainly creates a lasting impression.  Head Coach Tom Renney said. "You always factor that into the equation, naturally.  You really do try to look at the body of work. you have to keep in mind, too, the level of competition that they may have played against up to that point in time."

Magnus Paajarvi and veteran Ales Hemsky will flank Eric Belanger on the first line.  Anton Lander will centre the second line between Linus Omark and Lennart Petrall.  Teemu Hartikainen will play on a line with Ryan Keller and Gilbert Brule.  Brule who is arguably on thin ice, received a bit of a wake up call when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put up a masterful performance with Hall and Eberle a few nights ago.  The good news for Brule is that he has the capability to play the wing which in retrospect could pay dividend for the Oilers.

After tonight's match-up the Oilers will fly into Vancouver to play their final preseason game against the Canucks.

Oilers Update - Yotes trip over Kids

The Edmonton Oilers continued their winning ways by defeating the visiting Phoenix Coytoes by a score of 3-2 to mark a 3 game winning streak.

Tonight the attention was supposed to turned towards the reunification of Shawn Horcoff, Ryan Smyth and Ales Hemsky - a line which haven't played together since the Symth trade in 2007.  Moreover, Oil Country finally was able to see Hemsky step on the ice since his shoulder injury which put him out for the remainder of the 2010/11 season.

However...

Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were the glaring stand-outs in the win as the pair each shared 3 points between them.

On the power-play in the first period, Taylor Hall chased down the puck and chipped the puck over the Coyotes defender, shot the puck on net and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins threw in the garbage for his first goal of the pre-season.

One minute and change into the second period the kids struck again with Nugent-Hopkins rifling a pass (between three defenders) to Hall who made no mistake and went roof-daddy on Smith to put the Oilers up by 2.

Middle of the second, the kids concluded their night with Taylor Hall's second laser blast of the evening.  Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle collected apples on the 3rd goal to put the game out of reach for the Coyotes.

The Coyotes did manage to solve Khabibulin when Ray Whitney and Shane Doan rattled the Russians twine, though the 38 year-old net minder turned aside 18 shots.

The Oilers will now rest up and prepare for a show down in Minnesota this Friday.

Oilers Update - Oilers vs Phoenix at Rexall

After shutting out the Calgary Flames a few nights ago the Edmonton Oilers will now try there hands against the Phoenix Coyotes.

During the afternoon skate it said that Hemsky, Horcoff, and Smyth were reunited on the same line which instantly brought back a lot of memories for the trio.

“It's going to be a lot of fun,” Ryan Smyth said about practicing with his old line mates. “We're going to re-hash some memories and hopefully we can get something going. We have a good read off each other pretty good."

While it may seem that the Oilers will place the aforementioned players on the same line tonight; Head Coach Tom Renney was quick to reiterate that every option whether it be old or new will be closely inspected and considered. Hence, it's all about chemistry and timing.

“You've got to look at your entire team, the roster and who can deliver what. At some point in time, they need to know what's expected of them. I've got a plan for these guys. It doesn't necessarily include the trio together, but it's an option.” Renney said.

Aside from the Horcoff line, Edmonton fans will once again get a good look at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who will center Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle on the second line.

“It should be good,” Eberle said. “Me and Taylor played together last year and had some good chemistry. In the short couple games we've played together, I've had some chemistry with Hopkins as well."

Eric Belanger will suit up tonight to face his ex-squad and he will center between Tyrvainen and Jones.

The goaltenders for tonight's game will feature the Bulin Wall who will be backed up by Yann Danis.

Sam Gagner who was injured playing against the Calgary Flames has found out that he has a low grade high ankle sprain and will be out "week to week." said Gagner who is now wearing leg brace on his left leg.  Gagner though is expecting to return to the line-up in time for the start of the season.

Oilers Update - Oilers 3 Flames Bagel

It only took 3 goals in the second period as the Oilers went on to defeat the Calgary Flames tonight in Cowtown.

Shawn Horcoff opened the scoring at the 4th minute mark after receiving a beauty between-the-legs pass from Linus Omark.  Omark hit the score sheet again with a power play goal when he ripped a quick wrister past goaltender Karlsson.  Taylor Fedun and Jordan Eberle helped create the tic-tack-toe play to earn their first assists of the game.  Late in the third it was Eberle who rattled the twine from Fedun's pass in the slot to punctuate the Oilers win.

The player of the game was none other than Oilers netminder, Devan Dubnyk.  Dubnyk collected his first preseason shutout stopping all 30 shots he faced.

The Oilers will rest until Tuesday when they face the Phoenix Coyotes.

Oilers Update - Integral Hockey Inc Follow Up.

Integral Hockey Stick Repair Video Review

The other day, I took some footage of myself shooting some pucks in order to provide you all with some feed back about Integral Hockey Inc.

If you are a true hockey player who has a stick at home which needs some TLC, I suggest for you to get it fixed by Integral Hockey, right now.

I was absolutely impressed with the balance of the stick, the response and flexibility of the shaft and the overall craftsmanship of the repair.  Most importantly, I was able to shoot with accuracy as I didn't have to over-compensate my shooting motion, but rather let the stick do all the work.

In my opinion, Integral Hockey Inc. is truly onto something which I believe every avid hockey player should take notice.

This technology is a wonderful way to give you peace of mind when buying top end hockey sticks.  Simply, if it breaks it can be fixed and it will look, feel and play like brand new.

Enough said.

Oilers Update - Battle of Alberta Part 2

Last night the Edmonton Oilers defeated their foes in the south by a score of 2-1 thanks to Taylor Hall's last minute heroics in the third.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins peeled off of the half-boards and threw the rubber towards the awaiting Hall who then swatted the rebound for the eventual win.

The line of Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Hartikainen were causing all kinds of trouble for the visiting Flames however, Oilers fans will not be able to see the dynamic trio tonight.

Instead, the Oilers roster for tonight's rubber match will look like this.

Paajarvi - Horcoff - Omark
Hamilton - VandeVelde - Eberle
Cornet - O'Marra - Hartikainen
Hordichuk - Brule - Petrell

Smid - Potter
Barker - Plante
Peckham - Fedun

Oilers Update - Battle of Alberta at Rexall

The Oilers are coming off of a very disappointing 2-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks 48 hours ago. Tonight, the preseason continues with the Calgary Flames visiting Rexall Place and the young Oilers will try to post a "w" in the column.

With an abundance of talent within the ranks of the Oilers, Head Coach Tom Renney has decided to place the 2010 and 2011 #1 draft picks on the same line with Teemu Hartikainen on the right side. Renney had this to say about his decision to put the aforementioned trio on the first line.  "We want to see if there's some synergy there, and maybe a glimpse in to the future - we don't get too far ahead of ourselves.  As far as I am concerned, it's another opportunity to evaluate another combination of people."

"I'm excited to play with Hall and Nugent-Hopkins, It's a good opportunity to show my skill and help them as well.  I should be good.  said Hartikainen.

Here is the rest of tonight's line-up.

Ryan Jones - Sam Gagner - Ryan Keller
Josh Green - Eric Belanger - Tyler Pitlick
Antti Tyrvainen - Anton Lander - Ryan Martindale

With the exception of Ryan Whitney, the Oilers defence may look similar to this come the season opener.

Cam Barker - Kirill Tulupov
Andy Sutton - Tom Gilbert
Theo Peckham - Jeff Petry

In goal for the Oilers will be the 38 year-old Nikolai Khabibulin who will be backed up by Olivier Roy

Oilers Update - Oh I remember that! Stefan steals and he'll ice it...

Hello Hockey Fans!

Today on "Oh I remember that!" is something we've all seen many times over...in fact this will never get old.

Not to pick on the culprit from the Dallas Stars who embarrassingly missed a wide open cage some 4 years ago, but it is Friday and it's time for some entertainment.

With less than 10 seconds to play Patrick Stefan stripped the puck off of Marc-Andre Bergeron and went in all alone on the open net to seal a Dallas win; but the forward missed the target completely.

Give him a break!!! The puck hopped over his stick! It was late in the game and the ice was bad...blah, blah, blah!

On ensuing debacle, Jarret Stoll gathered the puck and rifled it up to Ryan Smyth who then found Ales Hemsky on the doorstep and #83 deked out Marty Turco to send the game to overtime.

The video you are about to watch was collaborated by a hockey fan who felt it was necessary to include some "appropriate" graphics.

Happy Friday!

Oilers Update - Canucks Edge Oilers

On paper, it should've been a blow out.  Just prior to game time the Edmonton Oilers top guns probably chuckled when they took a gander at the Canucks roster.  With no Sedin twins, Kesler, Luongo and practically the rest of the Canucks, the Oilers sauntered onto Rexall to play shinny and lost 2-1 to the Canucks.

"It wasn't out best, obviously, in the pre-season you're trying to get your legs underneath you and  trying to get chemistry with lines and we just couldn't find it." said Shawn Horcoff.  The Captain broke his ankle 7 months ago and probably could've used some grease around the ol' rusted joints.  In fact, akin to what Horcoff suggested, the entire club are still not 100% as they hobble along into the start of the season.

Darcy Hordichuck on-the-other-hand appears to be ready to crack the line-up after having exemplifying what it means to be ready for a match.  The former Canuck made it quite clear to Tom Renney that he is good to go for the start of the season when he dropped the mitts twice in last night's contest.

Taylor Hall, Linus Omark and Magnus Paajarvi all couldn't find the score sheet, yet Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tallied his first assist at Rexall place on Jordan Eberle's short handed goal.

Oilers Update - Oilers vs Canucks Preseason

The Edmonton Oilers will face the Vancouver Canucks tonight at Rexall Place.  The Oilers have decided to forge a line-up which will consist mainly of veterans, but rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will get his opportunity to show the Oilers Scouts and Brass what he is made off.  The Oilers first round choice will centre between Ryan Smyth and Jordan Eberle on the first line.   Omissions for the Oilers are Ryan Jones, Ben Eager, Cam Barker and U2's Bono's favorite Oilers Gilbert Brule will watch the game from the rafters.

Here is the Oilers roster for tonight's match-up.

Ryan Smyth - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Jordan Eberle
Taylor Hall - Sam Gagner - Tyler Pitlick
Magnus Paajarvi - Shawn Horcoff - Linus Omark
Darcy Hordichuck - Tanner House Lennart Petrell

Ladislav Smid - Tom Gilbert
Theo Peckham - Jeff Petry
Taylor Chorney - Alex Plante

Devan Dubnyk - Yan Danis

The Vancouver Canucks will have somewhat of an AHL line-up which will consist of players whom haven't had much playing time in the show.

Owen Nolan on the other hand will find himself on the top line with Niko Dimitrakos and Canucks top draft pick Cody Hodgson. The 39 year-old Nolan spent the last season in Zurich playing in the Swiss League and he is now looking to crack the club. The Canucks top players such as The Sedin twins, Ryan Kesler and Roberto Luongo will not dress for tonight's contest.   On the topic of goaltenders, Manny Legace will ma the pipes for the Canucks and he will be backed up by Eddie Lack.

Oilers Update - Oilers Split Double Header

The Oilers made their preseason debut with a simultaneous double header with 2 games played in Saskatoon and Edmonton.

Oilers Squad #1 faced the Minnesota Wild at Rexall Place, yet fell to a 4-3 decision to the visiting side, led by Jared Spurgeon's game winner.  The Wild put up 3 goals in the first, but squandered their lead in the second when the Oilers stormed back tie the game.  Anton Lander, Magnus Paajarvi and Antti Tyrvainen, posted their first genos of the preseason.

Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 7 out 10 shots he faced throughout the game, while Taylor Hall could only muster 4 shots on net.

Jordan Eberle's game winning goal helped the Oilers Squad #2 defeat the Chicago Blackhawks in Saskatoon yesterday evening.  In the second period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins connected with Ryan Smyth who then slipped the biscuit past Hawks' Ray Emery.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins earned his first assist of the preseason, but the man-of-the-match was Ryan Smyth who collected a goal and two helpers.

The Oilers went on to defeat the Hawks by a score of 4-2.

The Oilers will now face the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place in Edmonton this Thursday.

Oilers Update - "Oh I remember that!" Or Maybe Not!

Friday!! Hockey Fans...you know what that means!

Today I'm going to share with you something that well...I've only heard about and I wonder if any of you have seen the highlights to this little gem.

Our boys in the copper and blue flew into Pittsburgh for the very first time in franchise history, for a game against the Pens at the Civic Arena.

As the game went on, things turned ugly when a massive bench clearing brawl erupted.  My guess it was probably instigated by the legendary pugilist Dave Semenko.  In fact, the footage which you are about to watch has all the overtones of that brilliant movie sans the Hanson Brothers and Dave "Killer" Carlson. However, this footage could fit right into Nancy Dowd's script: with the 70's feel of old time hockey, the players attempted vault over glass to pummel the crowd, and of course the dulcet tones from the organist (whom I bet played "Lady of Spain" which triggered Semenko to flip-his-lid).

Finding some accurate information about this game will take some digging...however It's bloody Friday and our beers await, so I'll just leave you with some comments made by people who "according to them" were actually at the game.

"I was there I can't believe this video exists.  I have been telling stories about this game for years.  The delay for the bench clearing brawl was about an hour long (Honestly)... wrote yenzerbob on Youtube.

Another member from Youtube wrote.

"I was at the game.  I remember ex-Pen Mike Corrigan running down from his seat trying to get to Sather on the bench..."

I'll shut up now.  Enjoy.

"Don't throw it away...keep it in play." Oilers Update Speaks with Integral Hockey

Integral Hockey Stick Repair Inc. says, “Don’t throw it away.  Keep it in play.”

Before tossing that $250 broken hockey stick into the dump, or banging it into the soil next to your tomato plants, Canadian company Integral Hockey Inc. wants to repair your stick, and keep you playing.

Integral Hockey was founded by Randy Langille, who developed a way to fix carbon fiber sticks using actual aerospace technology.  While the technology may seem out-of-this-world, the process is quick, affordable, and the near-seamless repair will look and feel like a brand new stick.  Moreover, the company prides itself with their involvement with KidSport Canada, who, like Integral Hockey, is committed to see children play Canada’s game.

Since their inception less than a year and a half ago, Integral Hockey has proudly set-up 9 repair locations across Canada, and now hopes to expand globally, via franchising.

Recently, I had the chance to speak with Gord Piercey, who is the National Sales Manager of Integral Hockey Inc.  Mr. Piercey took some time away from his busy schedule to give me some insight about one of Canada’s newest and hottest, hockey companies.

Sept 3rd 2011

Antony: How long has this company been around for?

Gord Piercey: The company has been around for approximately a year and a half.  The development of the process has been around for a bit longer than that, around two years full on with the development of the repair process.

Antony:  I have seen other technologies out there, but this technology seems to be better.  What makes it so much better?

Gord:  First of all, the result is a much better feel for the players, and we add very little weight to the stick. I did an experiment the other day where I took a stick before it was repaired. I weighed it prior to repairing it, repaired it, and found we had only added, in this instance, 4 grams of weight, whereas I do have a repair from another company where we took a 12 inch section of stick and weighed it, finding it was significantly heavier, 48 grams more than an unrepaired 12 inch section of stick.

Antony:  That is a real change; I would be able to feel that.

Gord:  Yes. What we do when we repair the stick, is we don’t change the dynamics from a new stick, what I mean by that, is that the stick feels and performs the same as a new stick because we don’t compromise the weight, the balance, or the kick point, or anything like that, all the good stuff that you buy a new stick for is still retained in our repairs.

Antony:   I can relate, because I have played with sticks that have been fixed, and some of these technologies have to include a plug, like a piece of wood, and they feel unbalanced.

Gord:  Our competitors use, what you’re referring to, as the plug system; it’s actually what they call a foam core that is wrapped in carbon fiber.  So, they actually pour liquid resin down the shaft to fill up the void, and it’s a five inch space in there that is filled with foam carbon fiber and pure resin, which is where the weight factor comes in.  Ours is a system that was developed applying actual aerospace technology, and we’ve adapted that system to repair hockey sticks.  So the end result is a hollow carbon repair which weighs very, very little and allows for the stick to flex, just like a brand new one.

Antony:  To me that’s quite amazing. I’ve seen some of these sticks, and we’ve all seen it in the NHL - these players are on the ice, where one moment the puck is on the stick, and all of a sudden, the stick is in two, and a lot of them seem to be un-repairable, but you’re telling me that with this technology, it’s like the stick is brand new.

Gord:  Just like a brand new stick. Being a new company, we’ve done a lot of research and development, and we’ve had a lot of sounding boards, or test facilities you might say, with Junior players, and we actually now have generated interest from the playing level at the NHL, where we have players in Calgary at a mini-camp using our products and testing them.

Antony:  I would like to know some of these players who are interested in your technology.

Gord:  It started out working with an Alberta Junior team, the Olds Grizzlies. They’re a Junior A club in the AJHL.  We’ve been talking to them for over a year, and they were one of our test subjects. We gave them a bunch of sticks about a year and half ago, and we asked them to use them.

When we got to the point where we’d honed our skill, where our sticks were being played at a higher level than we ever expected them to be, the club started looking into franchise opportunities.

On the board of directors was a gentleman who’s friend, Jason Jaffray* (recently signed with the Winnipeg Jets), was looking for a business to get into with his own business partner. They requested some sticks to test, so we sent them one stick, and he (Jaffray) said, “this is great, and it feels very, very good, but the real test is if you repair my own stick.”  So, he sent us 3 of his sticks which we repaired and sent back, and I believe they are on the ice now since he should’ve received them earlier this week. I haven’t heard the feed-back yet, but I will very soon.

Antony:  I hope we can discuss that when it happens.

Gord:  Yes, that is very exciting for us because he was skating with a bunch of other NHL’er’s in a mini-camp with other high-end Junior hockey players.

Antony:  If I were to break a stick, how much would it cost to repair?

Gord:  It’s up to the individual franchise to post their pricing, but we started off with a $45 repair.  We found that $45 was a good way to get our product out there at the beginning, but most of our franchises are charging about $50 (plus tax), per repair.

At the NHL level, we will NOT be repairing player’s sticks.  We’re in the process of getting the word out right now so that people know that when they break a stick, there’s a good way of repairing it. What we’re saying is, ‘Mr. Smith, go ahead and buy your kid that 250 dollar stick, because if it does break, there’s a viable way of repairing it, so you can put your kids into better sticks, and have a way to repair them if they do break.’

Antony:  Is it possible to fix the blade as well?

Gord:  There are blade repairs available, but we only get into minor blade repairs.  The reason why we don’t get right into blade repairs is because at this point, a process hasn’t been developed to really do a good job on them.  There is more involved to manufacturing a blade than there is to manufacturing a shaft, and there’s all kinds of foam and everything else in there with layers of this and that; and when they do break (if you were to snap off a blade) you can never get that same feeling back, so basically, we really don’t want to have unhappy customers.  What we do is what we do best, and that’s shaft repairs; and if somebody breaks a blade, we do have a way to repair it using a one-piece stick.  We can actually put a new blade into a one-piece stick.  What we do is we have a customer pick out a blade that he likes, and bring it to us and we do the repair for them.

Antony:  If someone wanted to be a part of this franchise, who can they contact?

Gord:  They can go to our website www.integralhockey.com, go to our Contact page, and fill out the information, and it’s important to fill it out completely.  We get a lot of people who fill out their email address, but we would really appreciate a number as well, that way we can actually talk to people.  The reason why we like to talk to the person inquiring is because stick repairs have not had the best reputation, and we are truly different than what people have seen out there. We really like to discuss and let people know exactly what is it we do, and how we can help people.  We also have the KidSport program that’s set up with teams.

Antony:  Do you also offer training?

Gord:  Yes, we absolutely do offer it - it’s included in the franchise package. We offer two days of training. It’s basically a turn-key operation. For most people that have been trained by us so far, it’s been more or less a day, day and a half.   The reason why we offer two days is because it really is a two-part process.  The first part is actually preparing a stick, assessing the damage, then repairing the stick. The next day would be how we prep the stick, ready to be returned to the customer.  It really is a turn-key operation - when we leave, they’re comfortable with how to do the repair.  And if they have any questions, we are very easily reachable.

Antony:  How much is it to own a franchise?

Gord:  Every area is different.  We use a guideline of 180 dollars per thousand people, so the ideal franchise size would be around 100,000 people, and the franchise fees would be around 18,000 dollars.  Now, we do a little more in-depth research since some of the areas are very spread out, and some areas are where the population doesn’t include a high density of hockey players, or facilities. We do some demographics and research of the area, and we use a guideline of 18,000 per 100,000 thousand population.

Plus, we have a start-up package priced at approximately $3,400…which is all the tooling you need to do the repairs, including 24 repair kits, then, we go from there.

Antony:  I appreciate your time and thanks again.  I will do a follow up with you about Jason Jaffray.

Gord:  Great, and thank you, it was my pleasure – we’ll talk with you soon.

Hours after the phone interview, I managed to meet with Gord Piercey in person, and he was kind enough to allow me to try out a couple of his repaired sticks.  In light of his generous donation, I will record an on-ice video of myself firing some pucks, and give you my perspective on my findings.  However, I have a feeling that I will be very impressed with the craftsmanship of the repaired stick.

*A week after the interview, I received an e-mail from Integral Hockey, announcing that NHL player Jason Jaffray, is “giving Integral Hockey his full endorsement, since playing his own repaired stick, with excellent results. "

Oilers Update - Oilers Bagel Jets. Bunz Hero.

After coming off a 7-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks last Sunday, the Edmonton Oilers continued on with their winning ways by defeating the Winnipeg Jets 2-0 last night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

19 year-old Tyler Bunz was the clearly the best man on of the match as he turned aside 22 shots to help give his Oilers Rookies their second win of the Young Stars tournament.

Chase Schaber opened the scoring early in the first 2 minutes of the game. 6 minutes later it was Ryan Lowery's power-play goal to put the game out of reach for the visiting Jets.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins settled for an assist on Lowery's goal.

Oilers center Ryan Martindale suffered a hip-flexor injury.

Oilers Update - Oilers vs Jets Young Stars Tournament

For the first time since 1996 the Edmonton Oilers will take on the Winnipeg Jets at the Southern Okanagan Events Centre tonight at 7:30 Pacific time.

To answer those swirling questions about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins...yes he will dress tonight. 48 hours ago, the 18 year-old phenom helped his club with an assist to trounce the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 7-2.  Anton Lander led the team in scoring by potting two goals, but the young Swede will draw out of tonights game to make way for Medicine Hat Tiger, Tyler Pitlick.

Pitlick was chosen in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at 31st over-all by the Oilers and hopes to find some work in Oklahoma City.

Also out for tonights game and for the rest of the tournament is Colten Teubert.  The defenceman suffered what looked be a broken nose after getting smoked by the fist of Adam Polasek during a tilt. "It was going good at the start, and then I opened up and got my bell rung." said Teubert.  "I think it's broken, but I am feeling pretty good right now."

The last noticable change for the Oilers will be in goal.  Tyler Bunz is expected to guard the cage in place of Oilvier Roy.

Oilers Update - Oilers Rookies Slay Canucks 7-2

The Edmonton Oilers Rookies defeated the Vancouver Canucks Rookies by a score of 7-2 last night at the Southern Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton BC.

The Canucks struck first when Darren Archibald slipped a beauty past Olivier Roy, but nearly a minute later it was winger Curtis Hamilton with the equalizer to end the 1st period.

In the second frame, Edmonton Oilers' Philippe Cornet; lit-the-lamp to put the Oilers up by one to begin the onslaught.

The Oilers received goals from Anton Lander, Martin Gernat, Antti Tyravinen and Drew Czerwonka.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was absolutely dangerous throughout game despite having the least amount of ice-time between three pivots.  Out of all of the Rookies, Nugent-Hopkins, was clearly the best player on the ice.  The Burnaby BC native probably could've posted 6 assists had his teammates converted on his crisp passing.

Bono, U2 may want to be like Lander.

The story of the evening was Anton Lander who lead the team with 2 goals.  Lander appeared to have one of his best games in recent memory and it looks as though the kid could be combating with Gilbert Brule for a spot at centre.

Lander finished the game with 2 points, +1 and 5 shots on goal.

The Oilers will take to the ice again this Tues as they will face the Winnipeg Jets Rookies.

Oilers Update - Oilers vs Canucks Young Stars Tournament

Hockey season has finally arrived!

Tonight at the South Okanagan Events Centre, the Edmonton Oilers will face the Vancouver Canucks to kick off the second annual Young Stars Tournament in Penticton BC.

In the lineup, Oilers Fans will finally get a good look at the 2011 1st Overall draft pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.  Nugent-Hopkins will share the centre position with Anton Lander and Ryan Martindale.

Lander who had troubling camp last year, comes into the 2011 at 6'3" and 200 lbs, precisely the kind of size the Edmonton Oilers are needing to fill the pivot role.  Despite his change in frame, Edmonton Oilers Announcer Jack Michaels said that "Anton Lander looked great yesterday at the informal practice in Kelowna."

While most of us will have our eyes on Nugent-Hopkins and Lander; on defence, I simply can not wait to have a look at Martin Marincin.

The bruising 6'4" 184lb defenceman looked great last year and the Slovakian will make his return to the tournament.

The kid is big, mean and nasty and isn't afraid to hammer anybody along the boards or give a cheap shot or two.  Just ask Jason Zucker.

Here is the team line-up for tonight's game vs the Canucks
Hamilton - Nugent-Hopkins - Pelss
Cornet - Lander - Rieder
Czerwonka - Martindale - Tyrvainen
Smith - Abney

Marincin - Musil
Musil - Fedun
Gernat - Lowery
