Oilers Update - Oh I remember that! Dave Semenko + Tim Hunter = Brawl

Hockey fans it is time for some more "Oh I remember that!"


I am going to take you back to April 17th 1983 when our beloved Edmonton Oilers took on our much hated Southern opponents inside the old Corral Centre in Calgary, Alberta.


To set the tone of the game late in the season, the bench bosses from both sides, decided to send out their respective pugilists give the crowd something cheer about.


As deviously planned, Dave Semeko said hello to his old friend Tim Hunter along the boards and the pair immediately dropped the mitts for a small tilt.  


After a nearly one minute of fist o' cuffs the linesmen came in to throw-in-the-towel and held on to the goons to end the scrap. Nano seconds later, with a his fist free from the clutches of linesman Finn, Semeko threw one last punch at Hunter to punctuate the end of the fight...or so he thought.    Calgary's Jim Peplinski took exception to the cheap shot and ran after Semenko.  Within moments Peplinski's act sparked an old school line-brawl.

Oilers Update - Wade Belak Found Dead

Former Nashville Predator Wade Belak was found dead at his condo in Toronto yesterday.


The Nashville Predators released a statement about Belak's death.


"The Nashville Predators organization and family is shocked and saddened by the sudden and untimely passing of Wade Belak.  Wade was a beloved member of the oraganization, a terrific teammate and a wonderful father and husband who will be greatly missed.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Jennifer and children Andie and Alex.  We offer out full support to them at this very difficult time."


The cause of Belak's death has not yet been found, though police do not suspect foul play.

Belak was originally drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1994, he then went on to play with Colorado, Calgary, Florida, Toronto and finally retired from the Nashville Predators after being placed on waivers.


He was 35 years-old.

Oilers Update - #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

It appears that the 2011 1st Round Draft Pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, will make his imminent NHL debut with #93 on his back.


Nugent-Hopkins, appeared at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase in Toronto while wearing the legendary Oilers Retro sweater, along with his full hyphenated last name.

Oilers Update - Oh I remember that! Ryan Smyth loses teeth.

Hello hockey fans, I hope you are enjoying the final days of summer!  


Today on "Oh I remember that!" we are going to head back to the 2006 Stanley Cup Play-Offs, when the #1 hated Ex-Oiler decided to play dentist on tough-as-nails Ryan Smyth.


Being down a goal in the 2nd period, Dr. Chris Pronger had the puck behind the net and without thinking "did-the-right-thing" by attempting to clear the puck out of his zone to kill some time off of the Sharks power-play.  However, his patient Captain Canada just happened to intercept the errant puck utilizing his mouth.


Smyth went down with gloves in his face and stood up after wincing in pain for 9 whole seconds. Like the good Canadian kid that he his, Smyth skated off of the ice without the aid of trainer Ken Lowe.


Aren't we all glad that Ryan Smyth is back where he is supposed to be.

Oilers Update - Taylor Hall Injury Update - Duane Sutter

Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall revealed to the media about his off season, health and expectations for the coming year.

There is little doubt in my mind that Taylor Hall will come out flying as soon as he steps on the ice when the season begins.  Before, his first career tilt with Derek Dorsett on March 3rd 2011, the hockey world was just beginning to get a sniff of what Taylor Hall can accomplish.  Just moments before he dropped the mitts, Hall nearly scored a highlight reel goal after undressing Fedor Tyutin of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Also, Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini announced that he has added Duane Sutter to the scouting staff.   

“We are absolutely thrilled to be adding someone of Duane’s caliber to our scouting staff.  Duane brings a vast knowledge of the game and will complement our staff very well.” said Tambellini.


Sutter joins the club after being part of the Calgary Flames where he was the Director of Player Personnel between 2008-2011.

Oilers Update - Taylor Hall Hat Trick. Oh I remember that!

T.G.I.F!!!!  That's right.  It's time for "Oh I remember that!"

Today, our trip down memory lane will be a short one.  On February 19th 2011 the Edmonton Oilers were down by 2 goals against the now defunct Atlanta Thrashers after two periods.  

Early in the 3rd the Oilers were granted a 4 on 3 man advantage when rookie Taylor Hall decided to play magician by scoring his first NHL "natural" Hat Trick to put the Oilers ahead 4-3.  Fellow Oiler  Ales Hemsky, then provided 5th and final goal with an empty-netter.

What was absolutely magical about the young mans heroics was that all three goals all happened on the power-play.

If Nugent-Hopkins doesn't make the club, it'll be the first time in 20 years that a forward drafted No. 1 didn't jump straight to the NHL.

To make playing Nugent-Hopkins worthwhile, Oilers coach Tom Renney would have to play him on the first or second line. That means he'd have to knock either Gagner or Horcoff out of the top six. It's not impossible, and Tambellini even opened a roster spot for Nugent-Hopkins by trading Cogliano to Anaheim.

The Oilers have obviously had issues up and down their lineup for two seasons, and Tambellini feels he addressed some by bringing Smyth back and adding Eager to the fourth line as well as Sutton and Barker to the blue line. Sutton or Barker will likely be a second-pair defenseman along with Ladislav Smid, who re-upped for two more seasons this summer.

No matter what the veterans do, the success or failure of Edmonton's 2011-12 season will be measured in the development of its young core. Taylor Hall, Magnus Paajarvi, Jordan Eberle and Omark are all coming off promising rookie seasons. If Nugent-Hopkins can effectively join in that core at the NHL level this season, the Oilers will be a step closer to becoming a contender again.

Oilers Update - Rick Rypien found dead.

According to CTV Vancouver (www.ctv.ca), former Vancouver Canucks player Rick Rypien was found dead in his home early this evening.



More details to follow about the cause of death.


After playing 9 games with the Canucks last season, Rypien was sent to the Manitoba Moose for conditioning following an injury.  He later signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Winnipeg Jets.


Rypien is the latest NHL player to have passed since Derek Boogaard.  Boogaard passed away three months ago after ingesting a lethal mixture of drugs and alcohol.


Rypien was 27.

Oilers Update - "Oh I remember that!" Roli and Peca!

Hello Oilers Nation!  And of course to those who have stumbled upon my blog.

Tonight! I am typing to you from beautiful Seattle, Washington.   For the weekend, I am here to catch a ball game and to also "baby-sit" my friends during my brother's stag!  As the children take their little naps, I figured I'd sneak away and provide you with an other addition of "Oh I remember that!" 

I will keep this short and sweet as I do not want my ramblings to interfere with some serious drinking time. 

I am so glad you all understand!

We are going to break away from #99 and turn our attention to something which happend during that magical Stanley Cup run in 2006. 

The goal I am about to show you was one of my absolute favorites during 2006 play-offs. In my opinon this goal was one which stood out for me during the play-offs and one I think deserved some more credit than it recieved many moons ago.

The play was simple: Goaltender Dwayne Roloson decided to kill some time on the Ducks' power-play by dumping the puck into the Ducks' zone.  However, the attemped aerial "dump-in" immeadiatly converted into a pass to Micheal Peca who went in all alone on Sebastian Giguere to put the Oilers up 1-0.

Oilers Update - "Oh I remember that!" Pro Stars Wayne Gretzky

This week on "Oh I remember that!" is something I am positive you eaten at least once in your life. There is no secret, I used to tug on my mother's shirt to convince her to buy me that toy or box of cereal whilst shopping. My tricks were simple I would: administer a slight tantrum and/or unleash my brown, puppy dog eyes upon her and for some reason, my mother obliged.


General Mills', Pro Stars was a hit within my family of 4 children and definitely the one cereal I needed to have while watching Muppet Babies and Pee Wee's Play House on a Saturday morning. 


After watching this commercial, I remembered just how good the cereal was, until I realized that Pro Stars was nothing but star shaped Honey Nut Cheerios! 


Oh I am sure there was more than a touch of sweetness there...honey!!!!!!


Those bastards!

Eberle Scores his first NHL goal in his first NHL Game.

Anatomy of the Play:

Early in the 3rd period, the Calgary Flames were looking to tie the game at one a piece with a power play goal.  With the puck loose behind Nikolai Khabibulin's net, Jim Vandermeer collected the puck and calmly banked the puck off the boards to find Eberle's stick.  With speed, Eberle went in on a two one with Shawn Horcoff and well you know the rest...

Eberle's brilliant play, instantly became an highlight reel goal and was voted by many hockey fans to be the best goal scored within 2010/11 season.

Oilers Update - "Oh I remember that!" Wayne Gretzky and Joey Moss

It's Friday kids and it's time for, "Oh I remember that!"  


Every Friday, I will be posting videos from the past which will be solely dedicated to our beloved Edmonton Oilers.  My intent, is to bring you laughter, tears or even perhaps make you a little angry.  


All in all, I guarantee you that at the end of each video you will say to yourself, "Oh I remember that!"


This week I have chosen a PSA which aired back in 1986.  The public service announcement includes a very young tandem of Wayne Gretzky and Joey Moss inside the now refurbished Oilers dressing room.

Oilers Update - Khabibulin to Serve Sentence - Jail and House Arrest

It appears that Nikolai Khabibulin will in fact, serve a 30 day jail sentence for drunk driving.  


Yesterday, Khabibulin decided to withdraw his appeal and will serve jail time in the very near future.  The Russian net-minder dropped the appeal believing that the case would interfere with the start of the Oilers training camp.


Khabibulin's lawyer, Mark Dubiel said that his client will spend 15 days in prison while the other half will be spent under house arrest.  It is expected that the he will also wear an ankle monitor and will be given random alcohol tests.  He is also ordered to pay a $1500 fine and will complete an an alcohol program.


Khabibulin said in a statement "Despite assurance by legal counsel regarding the strength of my appeals case, I have decided to withdraw my appeal and proceed with sentencing.  Once completed I eagerly anticipate a timely return to Edmonton for training camp where I will strive to be the best player, teammate and citizen possible." 


In Feb 8th 2010, Khabibulin was pulled over in his Ferrari for going 70 m.p.h in a 45 m.p.h. zone.   According to Phoenix Police, the officer smelled alcohol and promptly administered a sobriety test.  It appeared that Khabibulin's blood-alcohol was level was at .164, which is twice the legal limit.

Anatomy of the play.


Leading by a score of 4-2 in the third period, the Flames looked to add another tally on a 3 on 2 rush, but the play was soundly broken up by Edmonton's Gilbert Brule.  With the puck bouncing in front of the Oilers slot, Ryan Whitney swatted the biscuit to find Andrew Cogliano's stick.  With blinding speed, Magnus Paajarvi peeled off of the half boards, snuck behind the defense and gloved an aerial pass from Cogliano at centre ice for a partial break away.  With little room to shoot Paajarvi, shoveled puck with one hand to beat Kiprusoff.





1st then 2nd at the Saddledome:


Paajarvi's one handed tally became his second goal of the year.  10 days before, the Oilers visited the Flames and the rookie recorded his his first ever NHL Goal.

Oilers Update - Jets New Logo

Yesterday, the Winnipeg Jets proudly unveiled their new logo to the hockey world.  Mark Chipman, Chairman & Governor of True North Sports & Entertainment commented about the emblem. "We felt it was important to authenticate the name Jets and we believe the new logo does that through its connection to our country's remarkable Air Force heritage, including the rich history and relationship that our city and province had enjoyed with the Canadian Forces."  said Chipman


The Jets has yet to reveal the overall look of their jersey's which is scheduled to come out in the coming weeks; and whether you love or despise the new look, Chipman eluded that the club will produce a retro third jersey in the near future.  According to Chipman the team did not have enough time to create one for the start of the 2011-12 season.

Anatomy of the play:


At the start of the 2010/11 season, Linus Omark was one of the last players to be cut from the roster.  The young Swede was promptly sent to the Oklahoma Barons for some seasoning; until a rash of injuries plagued the Oilers and thus opened a spot for Omark's NHL Debut vs the Tampa Bay Lightning.


With the shoot-out tied at 3, Linus Omark was given the nod by the bench boss to try to put the game out of reach for the Lightning.  Omark calmly administered a spin o' rama while collecting the puck, faked a slap-shot and then immediately tucked the biscuit "five-hole" on a bewildered Dan Ellis.  


The Edmonton Oilers went on to win by a score of 4-3.  Omark also collected his first NHL assist during the game.

Oilers Update - Andrew Cogliano Traded to Anaheim

The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward 24 year-old Andrew Cogliano to the Anaheim Ducks for a 2nd round pick for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Cogliano was acquired by Edmonton in the first round going 25th overall.

After the Oilers picked up a few key components during the Free Agent Frenzy, it seemed almost inevitable that the young speedster would find new address before the start of the 2012 season.

The native of Toronto Ontario leaves the club having played 328 games while scoring 146 points

Oilers Update - Top 4 Goals by H.O.P.E.

After the acquisition of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan Smyth's surprize return to the Oilers  and the frantic Free Agency Frenzy which brought in the likes of Eric Belanger and Ben Eager to Edmonton; the news has been somewhat dead in Oil Country.

As we sit and enjoy the lazy days of summer while waiting for the arrival the NHL, I will entertain you all with something I have been wanting to do since the 2010 season ended.

Anatomy of the goal:


Off of a Leafs turnover, Taylor Hall collects the puck from fellow rookie Jordan Eberle from centre ice. With speed, Hall gets an early step on defender Francois Beauchemin and goes in all alone on Jonas Gustavsson and rifles a back-hand to put the Oilers up 2 nothing against the Buds.  Later on in the 3rd period, Taylor Hall tipped in his second of the night from Shawn Horcoff's feed; as the Oilers went on to slaughter the Leafs 5-0 at the ACC.


Hall's highlight goal is quintessential of what the 19 year-old is capable of.  His blinding speed coupled with a willingness to crash the net at all costs is one reason why the rookie posted 42 points in 62 games.

Oilers Update - Day 2 Prospects Development Camp

Day 2 of the Prospects Development Camp came to a conclusion yesterday afternoon.  In the mix was Ales Hemsky who decided to part-take in a little scrimmage with the young kids.  Hemsky who hasn't seen the ice since his shoulder surgery, made it clear to the Media that his shoulder is not 100% though he is confident that he should be ready to in time for camp.

Oilers Update - Heart N' Soul Ryan Smyth Returns

#94 is back!

After being traded back to the Edmonton Oilers nearly 2 weeks ago, "Captain Canada" Ryan Smyth met with GM Steve Tambellini and the media for a formal "meet n' greet" today at Rexall Place.  

"I am overwhelmed with joy.  Coming back as an Oiler, to me is something I've wanted for a long time" said a very relaxed and tanned Ryan Smyth who faced the Edmonton media since his departure 3 years ago.  "It's something I will never forget being part of this organization, if you cut me open I'd probably bleed blue and I am excited and I can't wait for the season starts."

"I think once the season gets going  and you see the energy in the building and the energy around the city of hockey fever it's going to be a tremendous year." he said calmly.


Steve Tambellini also briefly discussed what he feels Ryan Smyth will bring to the young Oilers for this season.

"You know that Ryan is going to be there every night  and I know that he is going to scratch and claw for every minute of ice time...I can't think of a better fit as far timing for what we have with the group of young people, that need not only good players with them; Ryan is a good player but obviously we need people that can help in the team development. " said Tambellini

While Smyth and company sit patiently to ink a deal with his former club, Captain Canada understands his role and is eager to provide some leadership to the baby-faced Oilers.


"If I can mentor some of these kids along the way...cause they are kids (chuckles) then great..but the bottom line is bringing the work ethic on a consistent basis and competing at a high level." said Smyth.

The Edmonton Oilers prospects took to the ice today in Sherwood Park for the Oilers 2011 Development Camp. Big names such as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander and Colten Teubert were all in attendance.  Oilers' Correspondent Tom Gazzola will give you a break down of what happened today.

Oilers Update - Oilers Ink Peckham

The Edmonton Oilers announced today that they have signed defenceman Theo Peckham to a one year contract.

Peckham, 23 was selected in the 3rd round, 75th over-all in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  The bruising defenceman accumulated 14 points in 102 NHL games while collecting 198 PIM. 

The native of Richmond Hill Ontario will enter his 5th season with the Oilers.

Oilers Update - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins signs for 3 years.

Last night, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins signed a 3 year entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers. The 1st over-all pick for 2011 will be earning a maximum $925,000 plus bonuses and the young man from Burnaby BC couldn't be happier with the contract.
"I was very excited when I got that call. Nugent-Hopkins told the Edmonton Sun. "It's pretty incredible and I can just focus on just the hockey part now.  I'll train hard this summer, put on a few more pounds and get back on the ice." 

Edmonton Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini is looking forward to see Nugent-Hopkins step on the ice tomorrow for the Oilers Development Camp in Sherwood Park Alberta.  

Tambellini has made it quite clear that the Oilers will not rush the rookie into the pros.  In fact, the focus for Nugent-Hopkins is for him to bulk up but also prepare for the Canadian Juniors Camp this year. 

 "We know what kind of player he is and what he's going to be, but I don't think people know how quality of a person he is.  He's a respectful young man that respects the game and he has an incredible amount of respect for the Edmonton Oilers and I look forward to working with him for many years." said Tambellini   

"There is no rush with this player.  He's going to have an incredibly busy summer here.  We have some time to figure that out.  I just want him to relax and prepare."

Oilers Update - Free Agent Frenzy: Oilers Beef Up. Part 1

In a brief press conference , GM Steve Tambellini admitted that the team "will take a breath" before returning to the phones to make some more deals.  Players such as Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule, Sam Gagner and Shawn Horcoff are all on the trading block but it appears that the Oilers may have to wait until mid summer or the start of the season to swap players.
